President’s Message:
As we celebrate the holiday season, I want to share the inspiring story of Notre Dame’s miraculous reconstruction—a true tale of hope, which is what the holidays are all about.
In the heart of Paris, Notre Dame stands as a beacon of resilience and hope. The devastating fire of 2019 left many heartbroken, but it also ignited a global spirit of unity and determination. As we witness the meticulous restoration of this iconic cathedral, we are reminded that even in the face of adversity, we have the power to rebuild and emerge stronger than ever.
The efforts to restore Notre Dame are not just about reconstructing a building; they are about preserving a piece of our shared heritage, history, and unwavering leadership. Each plan, each stone, each piece of stained glass, and every intricate detail lovingly restored speaks to the enduring human spirit. It is a testament to our ability to come together, to heal, and to create something magnificent from the ashes. Remarkably, a structure that originally took nearly two centuries to build was restored in just five years—a feat made possible by one man’s sheer determination, faith, and hard work. French President Emmanuel Macron championed this ambitious and seemingly impossible timeline.
On the day of the fire, Macron declared that Notre Dame would be repaired and standing strong again in five years. His declaration was met with skepticism and criticism—many thought it was an impossible goal. Despite the opposition, Macron assembled an extraordinary team of talented experts. Together, with resilience, perseverance, and faith, they forged a plan to rebuild. And as promised, five years later, thousands of people gathered to hear the largest bell, weighing 13 tons, ring out over Paris once more as Notre Dame reopened. Over 40,000 spectators along the Seine River followed the festivities on large screens, celebrating this monumental achievement.
Flooded with light and music from its choir, the cathedral came alive once more in a breathtaking modern-day miracle. The great organ, with its 7,952 pipes, roared back to life like a sleeping giant awakened. What had been a soot-blackened ruin five years earlier now blazed with renewed vitality, marking the culmination of a nearly $1 billion global effort. People from all over the world and from every walk of life contributed to this restoration, proving once again that humanity is inherently good and capable of noble intentions. Notre Dame has become a pillar of hope in countless ways.
“It’s a sense of perfection,” said François Le Page from the Notre Dame Foundation, who last saw the cathedral shrouded in scaffolding in 2021. “It was somber then. Now, it’s night and day.” He also expressed hope that the cathedral’s revival could inspire peace throughout the world during a time of global unrest.
At the special reopening ceremony on December 7, 2024, the world witnessed hope in many extraordinary forms. I hope this story brings you joy and gratitude, reminding us that with hope, anything can be conquered. As Macron so eloquently expressed his gratitude at the opening ceremony to all those who saved, supported, and rebuilt Notre Dame, he called the reopening “a jolt of hope.”
Please carry this message with you, especially during this holiday season. We wish you a beautiful and blessed holiday season, and may all your dreams come true in the new year. Let us carry the message of hope and determination in our hearts, allowing it to inspire us to face our own challenges with courage and to believe in the possibility of renewal and growth. Together, we can rebuild not only structures but also the very fabric of our communities and our world.
May the story of Notre Dame’s restoration remind us all that hope is a powerful force capable of lighting our way through the darkest times. Let us embrace this journey with unwavering faith and the conviction that we can overcome any obstacle.
Rise, rebuild, and let hope guide us forward.
